Becoming KT Mountain Studio Part 2

+ Part 2 +
Finding my way to ceramics.
+
Once Sam and I settled into life in Idaho and I became a classroom science teacher my time focused on lesson plans, grading and continuing education. Yet, In my third year of teaching I was given a chance to play with clay in our art teacher's classroom. This became my solace, my awakening.
+
I allowed myself to be a beginner. To fail, to try again and be totally engulfed in the process. I set up a folding table in our spare bedroom, and hand-built or casted my first designs. Some of you have been around here since those early days, and have pieces in your cupboard signifying the start of a transition in my life.
+
For nearly three years, I would spend evenings and weekends working on projects, figuring out my signature style and playing with clay. I knew I wanted to transpose my illustrations and watercolors onto the ceramics.
+
Eventually I landed on a screen printing and watercolor technique. It's time intensive, and a labor of love. Today each piece is hand built or wheel thrown, my illustrations are drawn, created into a screen, printed onto a gelli plate, transferred onto the ceramics, painted, fired and glazed. Each piece handled over ten times taking hours to complete.
+
Finding ceramics, and this process opened doors for me. Allowed me to create KT Mountain Studio, allowed me to share a passion for ceramics and my observations of the world but most importantly, to meet all of you.
+
It has been, and continues to be, an incredible honor to create pieces of work with my hands that find their way into your homes. Pieces that become part of your daily rituals, and a vessel for the nutrients you give your body.
+
Ceramics was a step into the unknown, into building something for me to give to the world. A way to connect my mind, body and soul with others.

+

Today I shift away from hand making every ceramic piece to focus my time and energy on the paintings and illustrations that are feature on my work.  This has allowed me to partner with small manufactures for a variety of products as well as boutique stores around the U.S. to bring my art work to more local communities.
