Not only was I published in the Autumn 2023 In Her Studio Magazine, but I had the honor of being on the cover! Being able to share my story, my purpose and my WHY behind my work has been amazing! Read a portion of the article below.
Tucked in the west central mountains of Idaho is my little round house. It sits amongst the pines, has raised garden beds out back, and two large pups that snuggle with anyone who walks through the door. The spare bedroom has transitioned into my ceramic and illustration studio totaling a mere 200 square feet.
I am a scientist by training with both undergraduate and graduate degrees in Natural Science and nearly 15 years working in the field and as a classroom science teacher. Yet art has been my outlet for as long as I can remember. As a kid I would spend hours by myself uninterrupted coloring, drawing or just creating.
During college I began using my illustrations to document the species I was learning about or the intricacies of ecosystems. These field journal entries followed me throughout the west. From undergraduate work in Montana to the wilderness of Alaska and graduate studies in the Tetons. I carried a notebook, pencils and watercolor paints to document the places I traveled to. Overtime I found my way to the classroom, teaching middle school and high school science. During this time I gave all my creative energy to lesson planning, and working with my students. Until the art teacher offered for me to come and use his space and tools. Because I live in a rural area with no community studio space and coupled with living in a small cabin, this meant the world to me. I began staying after school to work in the art room a couple days a week and specifically with clay. It was something new, something I have always been drawn to, and something that allowed me to be completely focused in the moment.
